Washington’s Shifting Stance on Sanctions Amidst Potential Trump-Putin Summit

The Biden administration is reconsidering its approach to sanctions against Russia, prioritizing a potential meeting between President Putin and former President Trump. According to a statement from the White House, Washington is not pursuing new sanctions and is focusing on facilitating dialogue.

Specifically, the U.S. has temporarily suspended restrictions on activities previously prohibited under sanctions related to Russia, allowing for operations to be conducted until August 20, 2025. This easing of restrictions is designed to support the logistical preparations for a possible summit between the two leaders.

However, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Miller has cautioned that further sanctions could be implemented if the summit does not materialize. The move highlights the precarious and conditional nature of the U.S.’s strategy, driven by the possibility of a direct engagement with Russia.

Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing to release its 19th sanctions package in September, demonstrating continued pressure on Moscow regardless of the U.S.’s evolving position.
